‘Wow, I look really refreshed!’ After I got a Dermal Filler

Dermal filler is a nonsurgical, physician-administered treatment for nasolabial folds and other facial wrinkles. Using a fine needle or a microcannula, Dr Phanor Calle at Weston Medical Clinic & Cosmetic Center eases the filler under the skin to fill the soft tissue of the dermis. This adds volume and diminishes the appearance of wrinkles and nasolabial folds instantly.

Fillers ( Brand names include: Juvederm®,  Juvederm Voluma™ XC , Belotero Balance®, Restylane® ) restore volume and fullness to the skin to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. They are injected into the skin with an ultrafine needle or a microcannula and, typically, last from 6 to over 24 months, depending on the type of filler used.

If you’d like to restore youthful fullness to your face, add fullness to your lips, enhance shallow contours such as the lines from your nose to the corners of your mouth (nasolabial folds) or soften those facial creases and wrinkles, dermal fillers may be the answer.

Dermal fillers have been called “liquid facelifts” because they offer many of the benefits of a surgical facelift without the downtime.

Although they can’t help with excess sagging skin, these soft tissue fillers can add more volume and provide immediate results at a lower cost than surgery. These treatment aren’t permanent, however, and they must be repeated and maintained.

Some dermal fillers are used in conjunction with other skin rejuvenation treatments such as injections of botulinum toxin. Dr Phanor Calle at Weston Medical Clinic & Cosmetic Center will assess your needs and recommend one or a combination of treatments to achieve your desired results.

Dr Phanor Calle is a Physician Trainer in the DermaSculpt Skin Sculpting Technique for the Atraumatic Injection of Dermal Fillers with CosmoFrance.

Hyaluronic Acid ( HA ) : Young, healthy-looking skin contains an abundance of a naturally hydrating substance called hyaluronic acid (HA). But as you age, sunlight and other factors can reduce the amount of HA in your skin. The lack of HA causes your skin to lose structure and volume, creating unwanted facial wrinkles and folds – like those parentheses lines around your nose and mouth. Hyaluronic acid is not derived from animal sources.

Brand names include: Juvederm®,  Juvederm Voluma™ XC , Belotero Balance®, Restylane® and Expression®.

Using a dermal filler is a safe and effective way to replace the HA your skin has lost, acting like your body’s own naturally produced hyaluronic acid, helping to instantly bringing back its volume and smoothing away facial wrinkles and folds.

Calcium hydroxylapatite, is found naturally in human bones. This mineral-like compound is reserved to fill the deepest creases such as nasolabial folds, marionette lines. It’s also used to enhance fullness of the cheeks and other facial contours. Calcium-based microspheres are suspended in a water-based gel.
Brand names include: Radiesse®.

Polylactic acid is a synthetic material. When it is injected,  Polylactic Acid  works to replace lost collagen in a series of treatments by stimulating  the body’s own production of collagen. Collagen stimulators are facial injectables that are used to replace lost collagen, rebuild underlying structure, and reduce appearance of wrinkles. This substance is known to work particularly well in the lower half of your face to fill the lines caused by laughing or deep nasolabial folds. This substance is unlike other dermal fillers because it doesn’t produce immediate results. Instead, it stimulates collagen production, so results appear gradually over a period of a few months. On average, 3 injection sessions are needed over a period of a few months, to produce noticeable results that emerge subtly and can last more than 2 years.
Brand names include: Sculptra® Aesthetic.

First, Dr Phanor Calle at Weston Medical Clinic & Cosmetic Center will listen to your desired results and then evaluate your facial appearance and skin tone, examining the areas of your face to be augmented with a cosmetic dermal filler.

Map a strategy.

Next, Dr Phanor Calle will mark strategic points on your face as guides to the appropriate injection sites for the filler.

Clean the area.

Your injection sites will be cleansed with an antibacterial agent. Most the dermal fillers include an anesthetic in the mixture.

Inject.

The actual injections will take just 15 – 20 minutes total and sometimes more depending in the facial areas to be treated.
Clean up and ice.

The marks will be washed away and you will be offered an ice pack to reduce any minor and temporary discomfort. At this point you may apply makeup, but be careful not to apply pressure to the treated areas. Doing so may result in movement of the dermal filler.

Multiple injections may be required to achieve your desired results.

So, is a dermal filler right for me?

Dermal fillers are wonderful to rejuvenate your appearance, but they can’t stop the aging process.

Some people opt to have a liquid facelift with dermal fillers, delaying the time when a surgical facelift is more appropriate. It’s a great way to see some impressive changes and improvements in your appearance, until you’re ready for a permanent surgical option.

Just remember, you’ll need to have repeat treatments with dermal fillers as a wrinkle treatment to maintain that fresh, full new look.

JUVÉDERM VOLUMA™ XC injectable gel is the first and only filler FDA-approved to instantly add volume to the cheek area. What are possible side effects?  Juvederm Restylane Belotero Fillers

There is no downtime with dermal fillers. You can resume most activities right away.

For most Hyaluronic Acid Fillers side effects are mild or moderate in nature, and last 7 days or less. The most common side effects include temporary injection-site reactions such as: redness, pain/tenderness, firmness, swelling, lumps/bumps, bruising, itching, and discoloration.

For JUVÉDERM VOLUMATM XC, side effects are moderate (uncomfortable), and generally last 2 to 4 weeks. The most common side effects include temporary reactions at the treatment site such as tenderness, swelling, firmness, lumps/bumps, bruising, pain, redness, discoloration, and itching.

As with all skin-injection procedures, there is a risk of infection.

Complications from fillers are uncommon. The risks include:

  • Asymmetry
  • Bleeding
  • Bruising

Fillers that contain microscopic granular substances, particularly, calcium hydroxylapatite (Radiesse® ), may clump as a result of facial movement or your natural aging process. As time progress, these clumps can turn into lumps or nodules. Surgery can remove the lumps

As with all skin-injection procedures, there is a risk of infection.

  • Itching
  • Migration of filler material away from the original site ( Remember not to rub the treated area so that the filler material remains undisturbed ).
  • Necrosis
  • Redness
  • Skin rash
  • Skin sensitivity
  • Swelling
  • Temporary numbness
  • Temporary paralysis of facial muscles
  • Under- or over-correction of wrinkles

It’s important to realize that dermal fillers are not permanent. The way your face continues to age and how your body absorbs fillers will determine the timing of repeat treatments.

If you decide not to re-treat, your appearance will return to its original condition. Wrinkles and scars will return, and plumped lips will lose volume
